Until recently, data have been scarce on the cumulative epidemiology of community-acquired central nervous system (CA-CNS) infections, which are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. This multicenter, retrospective, cross-sectional study is the largest to date on this topic.
The investigators identified a total of 2603 infectious CA-CNS syndromes in 2583 patients treated between 2012 and 2014 in the infectious diseases and neurology departments of 37 participating referral hospitals in 20 countries in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. The syndromes were classified as meningitis (1292; 50%), meningoencephalitis (888; 34%), encephalitis (208; 8%), suppurative intracranial infections (e.g., brain abscesses, subdural empyemas, epidural …
