In a previous landmark trial, sphincterotomy was not better than a sham procedure in reducing disability from postcholecystectomy pain in patients who had undergone endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (SOD) with no objective evidence of biliary obstruction (type III; JAMA 2014; 311:2101). The researchers concluded that their data did not support the use of ERCP and sphincterotomy for these patients. Now, long-term follow-up data are available from participants in the original trial and its successor observational study.
