In mid-2016, the CDC issued an alert on the emergence of Candida auris, and by August of that year, 7 cases had been reported. As of May 12, 2017, U.S. reported cases totaled 77 from 7 states, with the vast majority in New York (53) and New Jersey (16). All of these cases were identified during routine patient care, but screening of contacts revealed an additional 45 isolations of the fungus.
Sources of clinical isolates included blood (45 isolates), urine (11), respiratory tract (8), bile (4), central venous catheter tip (2), and one isolate each from bone, ear, and jejunal biopsy.
