Pharmaceutical companies in India supply a substantial share of the world's generic drug production. However, environmental protection and enforcement of related laws are considerably less strict than in developed countries. Massive environmental contamination with antimicrobials has repeatedly been reported and may select for multidrug-resistant pathogens, of which India is a known hub.
