Linezolid, an oxazolidinone antibiotic, has activity against many gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). However, hematological toxicity (HT), mainly thrombocytopenia, occurs in 15% to 50% of linezolid-treated patients. To clarify which patients carry the highest risk for HT, researchers retrospectively analyzed risk factors for linezolid HT in 549 patients (mean age, 73) who had received linezolid in 2015 for a minimum of 5 days and survived at least 7 days.
