Norovirus typically results in a self-limited gastrointestinal illness that resolves within a few days. Chronic symptomatic infection with norovirus in transplant recipients has been described in previous case series. To better characterize the outcome of norovirus in transplant recipients, investigators reviewed data on 193 transplant recipients tested for norovirus during a 1-year period, of whom 31 (16%) tested positive for norovirus.
Of the 31 infected patients, 25 were kidney-only recipients; median time to diagnosis was 37 months post-transplant. Important complications of norovirus infection were common: 11 patients (35%) experienced wasting and 7 (23%) had renal dysfunction. At 6 months, renal dysfunction had not resolved in 5 of 24 …
