Psychological pain has been associated with suicidality, distinct from depressive symptoms per se. Several rating scales have been introduced to measure this construct. To examine the accuracy of one such self-report scale, investigators followed 57 patients with recent suicidality enrolled in a Veterans Affairs suicide-protection program (52 men; 35 inpatients); patients were typically in their mid-late 40s, and about half were white.
