As treatment of endometrial cancer (EC) becomes more complicated, outcomes are better when care is provided by gynecologic oncologists (GOs). In a retrospective cohort study, investigators used a U.S. database to assess the proportion of EC surgeries performed by GOs from 2014 through 2015 and to compare surgical mode and perioperative outcomes for surgeries performed by GOs versus other surgeons.
Among 5408 women undergoing surgery for EC from 2014 through 2015, procedures were performed by GOs in 91% of cases. Women who were older and had more comorbidities were more likely to undergo surgery by a GO. A minimally invasive approach was employed in about three quarters of women regardless of surgeon type.
