Approximately 1.7 million people have a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year in the U.S. (J Neurotrauma 2014; 31:26). About 75% of these traumatic brain injuries are mild (mTBI). Postconcussion symptoms usually resolve during the first months of the mild head injury. Neuropsychological dysfunction with impairment of memory, attention, and executive functions may occur.
Researchers conducted a 2-year observational cohort study of 910 patients with mTBI. Of these patients, 764 (84%) had post-traumatic complaints and 414 (45%) had emotional distress (depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder) 2 weeks after TBI.
