The classic view of a transient ischemic attack (TIA) as a focal neurovascular deficit lasting less than 24 hours is now viewed as too simplistic. In the hours and days after a TIA or minor stroke, modern neuroimaging shows dynamic changes in blood flow and progression to brain infarction.
To examine the association between perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) and outcomes 1 week after TIA, investigators studied 64 patients (mean age, 64; 45% women) with a recent TIA or minor stroke with brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including both diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and PWI. Patients were initially scanned a mean of 5 hours after symptom onset, then had follow-up imaging an average of 6 days after the initial symptoms.
