Early endoscopy can contribute to risk stratification in acute nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (ANVGIB) and is recommended in treatment guidelines. However, the impact of very early endoscopy (<6 hours) on patient outcomes is less clear.
To address this issue, investigators in Korea reviewed the records of 961 high-risk ANVGIB patients (Glasgow-Blatchford score, >7) to compare clinical outcomes of the 571 who underwent urgent endoscopy (within 6 hours of presentation) with the 390 who underwent elective endoscopy (6–48 hours after presentation).
