β-blockers, statins, and aspirin or other antiplatelet drugs usually are recommended after myocardial infarction (MI), but overall medication adherence generally is low (≈40%). In this study, researchers tested a combination of approaches to improve adherence in 1509 patients who were enrolled within a mean 41 days of post-MI discharges and were taking at least two of the four recommended agents. Participants were randomized to usual care or to a combined intervention that included electronic pill bottles to monitor adherence and generate reminders, adherence-based opportunities to win lottery prizes, notification of friends or family members of patients' adherence levels, and education and support from social workers and staff.
