Dual-Modality Screening After Conservation Surgery for Breast Cancer

Adding MRI or ultrasonography to mammography improves cancer detection rates, but the clinical benefit is unclear.

National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines recommend yearly mammography for patients with a history of breast cancer. To determine the potential benefit of adding MRI or ultrasound to annual mammography screening for these patients, Korean investigators conducted a prospective multicenter, nonrandomized study involving 754 women who had received breast conservation surgery and radiotherapy for breast cancer before the age of 50.

During a 3-year period, a total of 17 cancers were detected. The overall detection rate was higher with MRI plus mammography versus mammography alone (8.2 vs. 4.4 per 1000 women; P=0.003; sensitivity, 100% vs. 53%; P=0.01).
