AIDS-related mortality has declined markedly among people with HIV who are receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART). Determining the remaining causes of death in such individuals is critical to inform preventive efforts. To investigate the contribution of cancer to mortality in people with HIV, investigators analyzed data from 13 North American cohorts.
Among 46,956 people with HIV receiving ART between 1995 and 2009, there were 1997 incident cancers. Approximately 10% of deaths were attributable to cancer. AIDS-defining cancers accounted for 2.6% of deaths and non–AIDS-defining cancers contributed to 7.1% of deaths.
