Pertussis is resurgent despite global vaccination rates of >85%. One possible reason is the persistent reservoir of asymptomatic carriers of Bordetella pertussis. The effect of vaccination on asymptomatic nasal colonization has been difficult to assess in animal models, but a recently developed baboon model indicates that neither a whole-cell or acellular vaccine was completely protective.
