A Novel Siderophore Cephalosporin for Multiresistant Gram-Negative Pathogens

Given the rapidly increasing prevalence of multiresistant Gram-negative pathogens, there is an urgent need for new agents that retain antimicrobial activity. One such recently developed compound is the siderophore cephalosporin cefiderocol, which has high stability against most β-lactamases, including serine- and metallo-carbapenemases.

Researchers have now assessed the activity of cefiderocol versus other antibiotics with broad-spectrum Gram-negative coverage: aztreonam, amikacin, cefepime, ceftazidime, ceftazidime–avibactam, ceftolozane–tazobactam, ciprofloxacin, meropenem, colistin, and tigecycline.
