Several recent studies show improving survival and outcomes in extremely preterm infants (gestational age, 22–26 weeks) during the past few decades, but outcomes in infants born very preterm (gestational age, 27–31 weeks) or moderately preterm (32–34 weeks) are less clear.
In a large prospective cohort study in France, researchers examined neurodevelopmental outcomes in 4200 infants born prematurely at 22 to 34 weeks' gestation in 2011. At 2 years corrected age, parents completed a validated questionnaire on child neurodevelopment (Ages & Stages Questionnaire; ASQ) and children underwent medical evaluation, where neuromotor (i.e., cerebral palsy) and sensory (i.e., auditory/visual impairment) disabilities were diagnosed.
