Interventional endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) continues to be a rapidly developing field. Although endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) remains the dominant endoscopic modality for biliary drainage, EUS-guided approaches exist. Lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS), originally designed to drain pancreatic fluid collections, are now being used to drain the biliary tree in selected patients.
In the current study, researchers prospectively evaluated outcomes in 19 patients undergoing EUS-guided biliary drainage with LAMS at five centers in Japan and Hong Kong. All patients had unresectable cancers and had failed ERCP. All LAMS were successfully deployed in a transluminal manner without procedural complications.
