About 90% of U.S. counties have no abortion providers. Providing medication abortion by telemedicine could increase access to early pregnancy termination, but is this approach safe? Investigators retroactively reviewed clinically significant adverse events (hospital admission, emergency department [ED] visit with treatment, surgery, blood transfusion, death) for 10,400 women who obtained in-person medication abortions and 8800 who used telemedicine medication abortion services, available up to 10 weeks' gestation, from Planned Parenthood of the Heartland (PPH) in Iowa between 2008 and 2015.
