To address the ongoing debate about the use of antidepressants in children and adolescents, researchers conducted a meta-analysis of data from 36 randomized, clinical trials of two classes of antidepressants — selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors — in 6778 patients (mean age, 13) with anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or post-traumatic stress disorder.
Overall, the effect size was clinically small. Regarding specific disorders, effect sizes were moderate for anxiety disorders and small-to-moderate for OCD, which were not significantly different from each other but were significantly greater than the effect size for depressive disorders.
