Randomized clinical trials confirm that adding a long-acting bronchodilator (LABA) is the preferred step-up therapy for patients whose asthma is not controlled by inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). However, a minority of asthma patients would meet strict trial eligibility requirements, and a comparative effectiveness trial more closely captures patients we see in general practice. In this industry-funded open-label study, researchers performed a “real-world” asthma trial that included minimal entry criteria and study visits; rather, primary care physicians made initial diagnoses of asthma and made all adjustments to care after patient randomization.
