Effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) provides HIV-positive patients with almost complete protection against classic AIDS-related opportunistic infections and malignancies. It appears to work less well against other conditions for which HIV raises risk, such as cardiovascular disease and lung cancer.
Researchers used published data to construct a model for lung cancer–related mortality among HIV-positive smokers who were engaged in care.
