The pathophysiology of dyspepsia is multifactorial. To evaluate the role that motor disorders of the stomach play in dyspepsia, investigators retrospectively analyzed data from approximately 1300 dyspepsia patients who were evaluated for gastric emptying (GE) and gastric accommodation (GA) at a single tertiary referral center. Data on respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA; a measure of vagal function) were available for 300 patients.
Results were as follows:
30% of patients had normal GE and GA, 22% had abnormal GA only, 27% had abnormal GE only, and 21% had abnormal GA and GE.
Increased GA was more common in patients with delayed GE versus accelerated GE (14.0% vs. 6.8%; P=0.004).
