Approximately 1% of newborns have congenital heart disease (CHD), and 0.1% to 0.2% have critical CHD. Pulse oximetry (POX) has been shown to be useful in identifying CHD in children whose disease was not diagnosed prenatally; however, some cases are still missed.
In a prospective observational study, researchers analyzed the screening performance of POX plus cardiac auscultation for identifying CHD in over 167,000 asymptomatic neonates in 15 hospitals in Shanghai. Infants who screened positive (i.e., either test was positive) received subsequent echocardiography within 24 hours, and those who screened negative received telephone follow-up at 6 weeks.
