Association of Serrated Polyps with Metachronous Findings at Colonoscopy

To investigate the risk for metachronous high-risk adenomas after removal of isolated or concomitant serrated class lesions, researchers evaluated longitudinal data from a statewide New Hampshire registry of patients who had undergone two colonoscopies at least 12 months apart (median time between colonoscopies, 5 years).

Of some 5400 participants, on index colonoscopy, approximately 1000 had serrated polyps (hyperplastic polyps, sessile serrated polyps, or traditional serrated adenomas), 800 had high-risk adenomas (≥10 mm, with villous elements or high-grade dysplasia, or ≥3 adenomas of any size), 1400 had low-risk adenomas (1 or 2 tubular adenomas <10 mm with low-grade dysplasia), and 3200 had no adenomas.
