Treatment of acute ischemic stroke is very time-sensitive. Current guidelines state that patients with ischemic stroke due to a large vessel occlusion and without extensive brain infarction can potentially benefit from endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). Since smaller hospitals typically do not have interventional specialists available for thrombectomy, they commonly transfer acute stroke patients to a comprehensive stroke center (CSC). At times, when the patient reaches the CSC, the infarct has progressed and the patient is no longer considered a candidate for EVT.
