There is widespread disagreement regarding the type and timing of refeeding in patients who undergo endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Some centers allow early feeding, others suggest clear liquids only until the following day, and some even have patients fast for 24 hours following the procedure.
In the current study, researchers compared development of post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP) in some 250 patients randomized to 4 or 24 hours of fasting before reinitiation of feeding after ERCP. Participants had no physical or biochemical signs of PEP immediately following ERCP.
