The U.S. National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) has set cascade goals of “90/85/80” for 2020 (90% awareness of HIV status, 85% of diagnosed patients linked to care, and 80% of patients virally suppressed), similar to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) goals of “90/90/90” for 2020. Researchers used CDC HIV data from 2010 to 2013 to model HIV incidence, prevalence, and mortality. They then applied a model assuming the “90/90/90” goal was met by 2020, and a “95/95/95” goal by 2025, to assess whether the long-term goal of controlling HIV was feasible.
Assuming the cascade goals were met, there would be an estimated 19,264 and 12,439 new infections in 2020 and 2025, respectively, representing decreases of 46% and 70% from baseline…
