The potassium-competitive acid blocker vonoprazan is as effective as proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) in healing gastric and duodenal ulcers (Aliment Pharmacol Ther 2017; 45:240). To determine if it is also as effective as PPIs in reducing the risk for recurrent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)−associated peptic ulcers (PUs), investigators in Japan conducted a randomized noninferiority study involving 642 outpatients with healed NSAID-associated PUs requiring long-term NSAID therapy. Patients received daily lansoprazole (15 mg), vonoprazan (10 mg), or vonoprazan (20 mg) for 24 weeks and underwent endoscopy at 12 and 24 weeks.
