Measles vaccine successfully eradicated endemic measles in the United States in 2000. Outbreaks continue to occur, however, owing to importations from endemic countries.
In the current report from the CDC, researchers describe the incidence of measles in the U.S. from 2001 to 2015 and include several notable observations and trends over that period, as follows:
The number of measles cases reported was 2012, and 1789 of those were in U.S. residents.
The majority (70%) of cases occurred in people who were unvaccinated, or had unknown vaccination status (18%).
The overall incidence was 0.4 per million population (annual range, 0.1–2.1) and was highest in infants (ages 6–11 months) and toddlers (ages 12–15 months) at 5.4 cases per million.
