In another of the recent studies on the comparative efficacy of hot versus cold snare for removal of small polyps, Japanese researchers in 12 endoscopy units randomized some 800 polyps sized 4 to 9 mm to removal via cold or hot snaring. In the hot-snare group but not the cold-snare group, submucosal injection was allowed, as well as preventive hemostasis (prophylactic coagulation of vessels or red spots in the ulcer or clipping of a nonbleeding postpolypectomy mucosal defect). In the hot-snare group, submucosal injection was used in 44% of lesions and prophylactic hemostasis in 27%.
