The most frequent diagnostic criteria for encephalitis of any cause are decreased level of consciousness and inflammation demonstrated by brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pleocytosis. However, as is seen in IgLON5 syndrome, some antibody-associated CNS syndromes involve inflammation only rarely.
