Nutrition is an important consideration in treating acute pancreatitis, but the preferred nutritional protocol has not been established. Investigators assessed 30 patients at one hospital (mean age, 12 years) who were admitted with mild acute pancreatitis (based on clinical symptoms, amylase or lipase >3 times normal, or pancreatic imaging) and allowed a low-fat diet (<5 g fat per entrée and <1 g fat per snack) at their own direction. They compared the patients with 87 matched historical controls who received nutrition at the direction of the treatment team (NPO on admission until symptoms subsided).
