Two recent studies highlight educational and legal gaps that must be closed to address the firearms problem.
Conner and Azrael used a Web-based survey to measure agreement with the (evidence-based) statement “Having a gun in the home increases the risk of suicide.” Fifteen percent of almost 4000 persons surveyed and 30% of doctors agreed. Among firearm owners, 6% and 12% agreed, respectively.
Matthay and colleagues compared firearm injuries in California 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after gun shows held in California (which has a 10-day waiting period before acquisition of a gun-show purchase) and Nevada, (which has no regulations).
