The MitraClip system for transcatheter mitral repair of severe mitral regurgitation (MR) was approved in the U.S. in October 2013. These investigators used data in the U.S. Transcatheter Valve Therapy (TVT) Registry from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) and American College of Cardiology to study acute outcomes in 2952 patients (median age, 82; 56% men) treated at 145 hospitals until September 2015 and 1-year outcomes in 1867 patients with Medicare linkage data.
All patients had comorbidities, including frailty in 50%, resulting in an STS predicted risk of 30-day mortality for mitral valve replacement of 9.2% (interquartile range, 6%–14%). Degenerative (primary) MR was present in 86% of patients. MR was graded as 3 or 4 in 93%.
