In a recent nationwide cohort study in Sweden, researchers assessed whether receipt of a colectomy prior to diagnosis of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) affected outcomes in patients with PSC and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Of approximately 2600 patients (aged 18–69 years), 8% had undergone colectomy prior to PSC diagnosis, and the remainder had an intact colon at the time of PSC diagnosis. During a mean follow-up of 8 years, results were as follows:
Overall, 13% of patients underwent liver transplantation, and 20% died.
The cumulative risk for liver transplantation or death at 1, 5, and 10 years was 9%, 21%, and 33%, respectively, in those with an intact colon, and 8%, 14%, and 26% in those who underwent colectomy prior to PSC diag…
