Impact of the 2017 ACC/AHA Hypertension Guidelines

With the new guideline, more Americans will be diagnosed with hypertension.

The 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) guideline on preventing, diagnosing, evaluating, and managing hypertension in adults (NEJM JW Cardiol Jan 2018 and J Am Coll Cardiol 2017 Nov 13; [e-pub]) update the Seventh Joint National Committee hypertension guidelines (JNC7), which were released 14 years ago. To ascertain the potential impact of the new guidelines, researchers reviewed blood pressure (BP) data from 9623 Americans evaluated in the 2011–2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
