Small process changes can lead to significant improvements.

Enhancements in medical and interventional therapies have improved the clinical outcomes for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients. Because timely treatment is critical, researchers examined whether a regional reorganization of STEMI treatment could further improve the time intervals from first medical contact to treatment and translate into better outcomes.

The intervention included prespecified treatment protocols, a regional coordinator covering multiple institutions, and regular multidisciplinary team meetings to design and direct the system.
