With sizable numbers of patients with schizophrenia failing to improve even when treated with atypical antipsychotics, including clozapine, the search for other pharmacological options continues. Cannabidiol (CBD), a “non-tetrahydrocannabinol” cannabinoid in Cannabis sativa, has attenuated tetrahydrocannabinol-induced psychotic symptoms and cognitive decline in healthy volunteers and may have reduced psychotic symptoms in small studies of patients with schizophrenia and Parkinson disease.
