Recurrence is common in both adults and younger patients.
After a patient's remission from a first episode of mania or a mixed mood state, the clinician needs to discuss with the patient the role of preventive pharmacotherapy. A systematic review with meta-analysis of studies examining disease course provides important information.
The meta-analysis included three observational studies in adults (N=293 patients) and three in adolescents or children (N=126); fewer than 25% of participants had a depressive mood episode requiring medication before the index manic or mixed episode.
