Online technology–induced (or at least technology-facilitated) mental health disorders are being recognized, with both the WHO and the DSM-5 considering formal designation of Internet or video gaming disorder as a mental illness. Problematic smartphone use, seen for example in distracted drivers and inattentive students, has alarmed clinicians; the most attention has been paid to the potentially negative effects of Facebook, now used by >2 billion individuals, many of whom develop strong needs to stay online.
