Although anticholinesterase medications and memantine have been widely used for the treatment of Alzheimer disease (AD), they are by no means panaceas. During the past 20 years, the 5-HT6 receptors have received increased attention as a promising target to improve cognition in patients with AD.
In this study, three randomized trials were conducted from 2013 to 2017 and included a total of 2525 patients aged 50 years or older with mild-to-moderate AD. Participants received idalopirdine (10, 30, or 60 mg/day) or placebo in addition to donepezil in studies one and two and any cholinesterase inhibitor in study three, for 24 weeks.
