Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is usually asymptomatic but, when severe, may cause back pain, pulmonary problems, and reduced quality of life. Routine screening for asymmetry of the shoulders, shoulder blades, and hips is recommended in adolescents by several national organizations. Exercise is prescribed for mild curvature, bracing for intermediate curvature, and surgery for the most severe or symptomatic cases. The USPSTF has reassessed the evidence on benefits and harms of screening and treating adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
