The relationship between platelet count and unprovoked major or minor bleeding risk in patients with cirrhosis is unclear.
In a prospective, observational trial conducted in Italy, researchers assessed this relationship in a prespecified subgroup analysis (the primary study objective was assessing the prevalence of portal vein thrombosis in cirrhosis). Major bleeding was defined as life-threatening or fatal, and clinically relevant, nonmajor bleeding as necessitating an increased level of care.
