Prior research has shown that nonadherence to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication — which is associated with poor academic functioning and high rates of substance use, illegal activities, anxiety, and depression — is estimated to be as high as 64% of prescribed doses among children and adolescents.
Now, to determine rates of ADHD medication adherence in college students, researchers studied 51 undergraduates with ADHD (34 first-year students and 17 juniors or seniors) at a moderately sized public university during the fall semester. Adherence was assessed monthly using data from student self-reports, pill counts, and medication bottles with electronic monitoring caps.
