Legionellosis occurs when an individual inhales aerosolized water containing Legionella bacteria, which are ubiquitous in fresh water environments. Typical sources for outbreaks include potable water systems and cooling towers. However, sources for sporadic cases of the disease are unclear.
To determine potential causes of sporadic legionellosis, investigators studied public health records of 736 patients who were hospitalized with confirmed cases of the disease in Connecticut from 1999 through 2015, when incidence in the state increased dramatically. The researchers also assessed data on 31 rivers in the state and reviewed temperature, humidity, and precipitation data from multiple sites during the study period.
