In previous studies, proximal colon sessile serrated polyps (SSPs) and large hyperplastic polyps (HPs; which might have been SSPs) have been associated with synchronous advanced neoplasia. In the current retrospective study, researchers evaluated whether small proximal hyperplastic polyps might also elevate risk for synchronous advanced neoplasia.
The prevalence of synchronous advanced neoplasia was compared between patients with the following screening colonoscopy findings: one to three proximal colon HPs <10 mm (~500 patients), no proximal HPs or SSPs (~1900 patients), and one to two SSPs <10 mm with at least one proximal to the sigmoid (~200 patients).
