About 3% to 5% of the world's population is estimated to have used cannabis at least once, of whom 8% might develop cannabis dependence. Effective treatments are lacking. Short-term nabiximols (non–FDA-approved, but available in Canada and Europe; an approximate 1:1 mix of delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol [THC] and cannabidiol [CBD]) has been found to alleviate cannabis withdrawal and possibly improve treatment retention. Canadian investigators conducted a 12-week, double-blind trial of nabiximols, enrolling 40 cannabis-dependent patients recruited via advertisements (mean age, 33; 72% male; mean cannabis intake, 6 g/week; mean frequency, 6 days/week).
