Approximately 25% of all instances of symptomatic Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) recur within 30 days, and the attributable cost of a recurrence is more than $11,000. Bezlotoxumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody directed against C. difficile toxin B. Two prior randomized studies, MODIFY I and II, demonstrated a 38% reduced risk for recurrent CDI when bezlotoxumab is given with standard antimicrobial therapy. These researchers conducted the current industry-supported study to assess the cost-effectiveness of bezlotoxumab versus placebo for prevention of recurrent CDI.
