Sorafenib is the only agent approved for first-line treatment of patients with advanced hepatocellular cancer (HCC). Regorafenib and nivolumab are the only agents approved for second-line treatment of patients who fail to respond to sorafenib. New therapies are therefore needed to manage HCC.
To compare the efficacy and safety of first-line lenvatinib — a tyrosine kinase inhibitor targeting VEGF, FGF, PDGF, and other receptors — versus sorafenib in this setting, investigators conducted an industry-sponsored, multicenter, randomized, open-label, noninferiority, phase III trial involving 954 patients with unresectable HCC who had not received prior systemic HCC therapy.
